So I've been reading this Christian book titled The Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne. So far it's a captivating biographical account of a young man and his church trying to live authentically for Jesus. It really reminds me that Christ's love is truly radical in every sense. It's an uncomfortable, threatening, all enveloping love and sometimes we just don't know what to do with it. In class last Sunday, I read this passage from the book: "I came to realize that preachers were telling me to lay my life at the foot of the cross and weren't giving me anything to pick up. A lot of us were hearing 'don't smoke, don't drink, don't sleep around' and naturally started asking, 'Okay, well, so what do I do now?' Where were the do's? And nobody seemed to have much to offer us."
I challenged our Sunday morning class to ask, what are the do's? If we are Christians, if we are being Jesus to the world around us, then what are our do's? I do agree with Claiborne that too often (especially those of us who have grown up in the church) we are always hearing about what we are NOT supposed to do as Christians - but no one defines themselves by negative attributes (what they DON'T do). So what does a Christian look like in action? What do Christians....DO? Or what should they be DOING? What does living for authentically for Jesus look like?
